Share certificates traditionally pay a higher rate of return than other savings accounts. A minimum deposit of $500 is set aside for a fixed period of time. This money earns a high, fixed rate of return. Dividends are calculated and paid quarterly and at maturity. Dividends may be added to the principal or paid to share account. Early withdrawal results in a penalty.
